Sandhill Crane Tours
DFG invites you to take a tour to see the greater sandhill cranes while they are in the Central Valley in fall and winter. The tour consists of viewing cranes and other migratory birds, a presentation highlighting the Reserve and the cranes, and seeing the fly-in of the cranes. Crane tours provide a unique and memorable experience for all ages.
Wildlife Tours
The swan tour offers participants a spectacular opportunity to encounter tundra swans migrating from the Arctic to winter in California.
The Sandhill Crane season begins with the arrival of the sandhill cranes into the Delta and Central Valley in about late September, where they will spend the fall and winter months. Tours consist of viewing sandhill cranes and other unique wintering waterfowl, hearing a presentation on sandhill cranes and their Reserve habitat.
Created by ancient lava (basalt) flows, North Table Mountain Ecological Reserve is an elevated basalt mesa with beautiful vistas of spring wildflowers, waterfalls, lava outcrops, and a rare type of vernal pool, called Northern Basalt Flow Vernal Pools. Guided public tours of the site are offered late February through May.
Wildlife viewing is available all year on this wildlife wonderland. In the fall and winter a vast number of migratory waterfowl fill the sanctuary. September through April guided tours are available for groups, schools or organizations through the Grey Lodge sanctuary.
The 1,400 acres that comprise Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve include salt marsh, mud flat, freshwater pond, oak woodland, and grassland habitats. Closed Monday and Tuesday. Docent-led walks available every Saturday and Sunday -- see DFG website for details.
