CWF Spotlight

Oak woodlands acquisitions in Placer County

Through its mitigation program, CWF accepted settlement funds for oak woodland losses in Placer County. These funds were matched with contributions from various partners to conserve land in the county. In addition to oak woodland habitat, these lands include riparian and wildlife corridors. These scenic and diverse oak properties are being held and managed by the Placer Land Trust.

Education, research and marketing projects

Atlas of the Biodiversity of California

The Atlas is a stunning compilation of maps, nature photos and illustrations depicting the rich diversity of the state's plant and animal species. CWF and its partners underwrote the design and printing of this fascinating guide. Contact CWF to order a copy.

Marine Studies Center

Using mitigation funds from an oil spill, CWF is working with a multi-disciplinary team to build an educational facility on Shellmaker Island at the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Reserve, Newport Beach. CWF also raised funds for a program that introduces visually impaired visitors to the reserve and its resources.

Crestridge Ecological Center

In partnership with the Endangered Habitats League, DFG, area school districts and others, CWF is managing funds to construct a new environmental education facility at DFG's Crestridge Ecological Reserve, San Diego.

Elkorn Slough Wildlife Ecological Reserve

CWF raised funds for new interactive interpretive displays at this natural habitat reserve near Monterey. Click here for more information about the reserve.

Mitigation Banking Relationships Program

CWF managed a $100,000 Ford Foundation grant to train DFG staff on how to create land banks, a vital tool for habitat conservation.

California Wildlife Habitat Program

CWF managed funds to develop a computer program that models the impacts of habitat alteration on wildlife.

Marine Life Mapping

In collaboration with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, CWF helped finance DFG's mapping efforts to implement the new Marine Life Management Act.

Sea Urchin Research

In collaboration with DFG's Marine Region and the Sea Urchin Fishery Advisory Committee, CWF manages a $350,000 fund. This is the result of a self-imposed sea urchin landing fee on divers and processors to finance sea urchin research and marketing.

Nimbus Hatchery Underwater Viewing Facility and Trail

CWF is assisting DFG with a new hiking and interpretive trail at DFG's Nimbus Hatchery on the American River, Sacramento. The public is invited to visit this site, where the young and young at heart can play on a giant salmon sculpture.
